Put a stick in the ground, mark the end of the shadow with a pebble. Wait 20 minutes, put another pebble at the new position of the shadow end. put a stick between them. North is perpendicular to the stick. As you can see below the line remains straight as the shadow gets longer.
To find midday, find the shortest distance between the upright stick and the shadow line, this will also always be north-south,
