Croydon District Renewal of Scout Promise

28th April 2014

Croydon District Renewal of Scout Promise

Special services held in Old Coulsdon, Coulsdon, Woodcote, Purley, Sanderstead, Selsdon, Croydon, Shirley and Crystal Palace.  A majority of the District were represented across the various venues with over 400 members alone from 12 Groups and 1 Explorer Unit attending the District Service in Shirley in a Service lead by our own District Chaplain Rev.Andrew Dovey.  In general we were lucky with the weather with the rain only hitting certain parts of Croydon later in the day.

Whilst we were all celebrating across the Borough other members from Croydon attended the St. Georgeís Day Service at Windsor.  In particular Yvonne and Brian Lamont (8th Purley) with their two Grand-daughters.  Yvonne and Brian both received the Chief Scoutís Commendation for Meritorious Conduct medal presented by Ian Newbery the County Commissioner on the Saturday evening whilst at camp and took their grand-daughters to Windsor on the Sunday.

From Brian and Yvonne Lamont

We would like to thank you (Ian) for presenting us with the Meritorious Conduct award on Saturday.

We are very proud to be in Scouting and part of 8th Purley.

We thought you would like to know we had an amazing day at Windsor yesterday being treated as VIP. As you know we took Phoebe and Abygail our 2 granddaughters as our guests who were so excited. The Duke of Kent and Bear Grills lead the parade of Queens Scouts. We were in the top part go the quadrangle with other meritorious and gallantry holders being waited on with sweets water and a lot of attention. The weather kept dry which after the forecast was a bonus.

After the Queens Scouts marched off we were paraded behind the Coldstream Guards out of the castle quadrangle. On our way out we were applauded by the other scout and public watching!!!!! After which we were all taken to a hotel for a reception of afternoon tea so no need for McDonalds! It was amazing lots of sandwiches and scones we were full by the time we left! During the reception Bear Grills made an appearance and congratulated the award winners. Both Phoebe and Abygail's dream came true when we managed to get a photo of us with the Chief Scout. I have attached the photo.

Both Abygail and Phoebe are now looking forward to their next visit to Windsor when they become Queens  Scouts.

A big thank you again we are very honoured to have been nominated and to have received the award.

Brian and Yvonne
