London Bridges Walk
Volunteers are desperately needed to help marshal the London Bridges Walk on Sunday 17th August, which is being organised through the Ben Hollioake Fund to support CHASE Hospice Care for Children, a charity which helps life-limited children. The walk starts at the Tower of London and finishes at the Brit Oval where walkers are able to watch a one-day cricket game between Surrey CCC and Northants CCC. Volunteers will be given a t-shirt and lent a high-vis jacket and are simply required to act as guides directing walkers in the right direction. Volunteers are also invited to do the walk if they wish and join us at the Brit Oval afterwards to watch the cricket from a special area of the OCS Stand. The Army usually help but are unable to this year, so please do get in touch with Catherine Loveless if you can help, either by phone on 01483 447752 or by e-mail to catherine.loveless@chasecare.org.uk.

Pathfinders Camp – Camping holiday for disabled women aged 18+
WE NEED YOU HELP! I am writing to ask for you help in finding volunteers. I help at a camp called Pathfinders - every year for one week, women and men from all over come to Woodlarks campsite in Farnham, Surrey to aid a disabled participant at camp. This year camp is from Saturday 23rd August to Saturday 30th August but is in desperate need of volunteers so more people can come camping!
We camp under canvas cook outside and participate in great activities throughout the week. We've been sailing, ice skating, done archery, arts and crafts, swimming and many more things throughout the weeks I've helped out.
I first volunteered 4 years ago and am now looking forward to my 5th time at Woodlarks. I originally went to complete my Queen's Guide residential but have returned year after year. It is a lovely setting with great friendly people who all share a passion for being outside and enjoy camping. PLEASE, if you know anyone who'd be interested PASS IT ON. A great chance for Queen's Guide, Queen's Scout or Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential!! OR just a great break with a chance to make new friends.

Greater London North Hiking Competitions
Greater London North organise two major hiking competitions each year, and these are open to Scouts throughout London and beyond...
First up is the Chiltern 20 Challenge, which is for teams of 3–5 Scouts plus an accompanying Leader. The date is Saturday October 11th 2008.
Second is the Southern 50 Challenge with three routes across the Chilterns on Saturday February 14th 2009 – 30km (Explorer teams only), 50km and 50 miles. The challenge is to find a team of four Ladies for either the 50km or 50 mile class. The Ladies trophy has not been awarded for a few years so perhaps we in GLSW can change that.
Please contact me (Chris Dean) for further information. Entry forms are usually available in October for the Southern 50.

Scouts of the World Award
This new award is being trialled by the Scout Association. It is a world award which can be adopted by National Scout Associations for their senior sections, and is based on the Millennium Goals. Our first Scouts of the World Discovery takes place at Youlbury Scout Camp near Oxford from July 31 to August 3 2008, and places are still available. The theme is ‘Environment & Sustainability’, and the cost £30, which is heavily subsidised. Further details are available from Gilwell Park.
After the SW Discovery there is a period of reflection during which participants finalise their plans for the second component, the SW Voluntary Service. This will be a service project lasting 14 days either in the UK or abroad. It can be undertaken in one or more blocks. Once this has been completed an assessment is carried out and the award granted. Successful participants can then apply to join the Scouts of the World Network.
It has been decided that the SW Award will be available to Scout Network members only in the UK (age range 18–25 years). For further information about Scouts of the World go to www.scout.org.

Queen's Scout & Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expeditions
GLSW has a programme of practice and qualifying expeditions in areas of wild country. Details can be found elsewhere on the website. The next expedition week is on Dartmoor from August 24-30, and we have now passed the closing date.
From October 28-November 2 we are running an expedition training course in the Derbyshire Peak District, and we are now expecting applications.
The next opportunity to undertake practice or qualifying expeditions is from April 12-18 2009. Details of the location will be published in due course.
If anyone wishes to qualify by bicycle, on horseback or water please contact the Deputy CC (Programme) for advice.
New arrangements for Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold expeditions in Snowdonia are now in place. Applicants should notify Plas y Brenin as the existing Expedition Panel has been stood down.
Kinder Walk & Kinder Challenge
These challenging competitive walks take place in the Peak District on Sunday 14 September 2008, and are organised by Derbyshire Scouts. The Kinder Walk (29 km) is for Explorers, Network and Leaders, and takes teams over part of Kinder Scout, so good navigation is essential. The Kinder Challenge is a 15km circular route starting and finishing at Chapel en le Frith. It is aimed at Scouts and Explorers.
Sussex Downsman Hike
The Sussex Downsman Hike is a well established competitive Scout hiking event with many classes, and available to Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders. It takes place over the South Downs on 4th October 2008. The longest route is 80 miles, but you can opt for something shorter if you prefer! For details phone 01273 833650.
