Going Abroad
There are many fact sheets on ScoutBase that may be of help. If you are interested in visiting an International Camp in the UK or abroad then the latest International Opportunities fact sheet lists events offering a range of adventurous, cultural and Scouting activities, as well as home hospitality. The Thinking of Going Abroad fact sheet is a working document designed to help you plan your trip. First time away or just want to go abroad without the hassle? You could try one of the overseas travel packages described in the Overseas Travel Packages fact sheet.
Before you go...
Before you go abroad you must complete an International Permission to Camp (PC) form. Please ask your ACC (International) for a copy.
Stuck for a place to stay?
There are several places to try if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Europe:
- Contact your ACC (International)
- Where to Stay in Europe is produced by European Scout Bureau. It gives an Internet search of over 300 places in Europe to stay including both campsites and indoor accommodation.
- Report back forms are a good source of information. These are included with your Visiting Abroad pack and should be returned to your ACC (International) after your trips. They are a valuable tool for Leaders wishing to visit certain areas.
- Kandersteg International Scout Centre - the only world centre of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).
Funding for Visits Abroad
Although exchanges, international events and visits abroad are usually organised economically and offer good value for money, the cost can be substantial for some parents. Therefore it will often be necessary to fund raise.
There are many publications around outlining various funds and charities that may be prepared to assist, and your local library is well worth a visit. Alternatively ask your DC or ACC (International) as they may have some details.
The County has also recognised that it has a role to play and has set up a fund for groups to apply to. Assistance will only be given to groups involved in community projects which are of environmental or social benefit to the local community. Although the community does not have to be the Scouting community, it would be expected that visiting groups make some contact with local Scouting. Further details are in the Going Abroad Pack.
The Fundraising and Grant Aid for Exchanges and Visits Abroad fact sheet on ScoutBase also gives information on funding for visits abroad.
Adventurous Activities Abroad
When groups go abroad they are often undertaking activities that fall into this category. The rules for Adventurous Activities Abroad are the same as in this country and it is important that you adhere to these rules. If you are undertaking any Adventurous Activities, then you must have the relevant authorisation for the area you are in. For example, if you are hillwalking in the Alps then your authorisation should include ‘Hillwalking in the Alps’. Leaders and District Commissioners must make sure that authorizations are valid for the area the group is travelling to. If you need further advice contact your District Commissioner or County Activity Adviser.
Groups often ‘buy in’ activities either locally or from their tour operator. Again it is important that Leaders and District Commissioners are satisfied with the qualifications and insurance of those taking part in the activity.
Further advice on this matter is available in the Adventurous Activities Abroad fact sheet on ScoutBase.
