KEYNOTE SPEAKER - RICHARD BUTLER, NATIONAL COMMISSIONER FOR SCOUTS AND CHAIRMAN OF PRI PROGRAMME DESIGN
The Chairman introduced Richard Butler to the Meeting and said that as well as being National Commissioner for Scouts and Chairman of the PRI Programme Design he had also been involved in the following
- Change to a co-ed organisation
- Led the Millennium Camp celebrations
- A leading role in the PRI review
- A leading role in the Queen's Golden Jubilee
Richard Butler said he had once been described as a 'lighthouse in a desert', brilliant but absolutely useless.
He said that an Annual General Meeting was a time for looking back and reflection. Without Leaders support young people would not get the help and assistance they need to learn more of the world about them. Thank you to everyone for their support, without you these young people would not get the funding and development that they need. We must not forget that we are supported by loved ones, who let us come out to play!! We do not go to Scouts we are Scouts. The Deputy Mayor was asked if he had been a Cub or Scout and he replied that he had not.
Census figures show that numbers are down but also shows that we have waiting lists.
PRI secrets, new programme, new uniform, implementation next year. Consultation has taken place over the last five years, asking you what you want. The Design Group has processed all this information and a new programme is shortly to be implemented. There will be a lot of changes for all Sections that will make it easier and simpler to deliver.
Thank you all and remember - "Young people are the only resource for the future" (John Fitzgerald Kennedy)

ADDRESS BY THE DEPUTY MAYOR OF CROYDON, COUNCILLOR ROD MATLOCK
The Deputy Mayor said that he would make his speech very brief, as the previous speaker had already told five or six of the jokes that he had written down. He also said that he had told a lie, he had been a Cub Scout for a while, but then he is a politician.
Councillor Matlock welcomed everyone to Croydon town. It had been a very good-humoured meeting tonight. Much better that some Council meetings.
Scouts provide a positive role model and he thanked everyone here tonight for providing that example. He also wished everyone to carry on enjoying their Scouting.
-
CLOSE OF MEETING
The Chairman thanked Croydon Council for providing facilities and refreshments and especially David Morgan and David Wall for the organisation of the occasion
The displays on show this evening were the Scout Trust Home, Seychelles, and Edge Hill Venture Unit of their expeditions to Romania, Ghana and Nepal.
