Hammerwood, near East Grinstead, East Sussex

This site is ideally situated for water activities at Weir Wood and Bewl Bridge reservoirs, Bowles Outdoor Pursuit Centre, canoeing and Medway, rock climbing near Tunbridge Wells, the Bluebell Railway and Hever Castle. The Ashdown Forest is accessible for walking and the Weald Vanguard Way passes through the site. There is a farm shop a mile away and East Grinstead 4 miles away, with an infrequent bus service.

There are no activities offered on-site but there are the resources to allow campers to organise archery, pioneering and orienteering. There is also plenty of space for games, bivouacs, backwoods cooking etc. Consisting of 30 acres of natural woodland set in farmland the natural setting has been preserved as far as possible so as to permit traditional camping. This includes a 3-acre field, with sites also available in woodland clearings. There is an abundant natural wood supply and standpipes for water. 150 campers can be accommodated and there is a hut, which sleeps 24. There is an additional hut with a fitted kitchen, which can be used for activities as well as catering.

The warden is on-site at weekends and vehicles are not allowed beyond the car park.

A lovely site for those who value "traditional" Scouting. However those used to hot water and flush toilets need to know these facilities are also "traditional".
