National Scout Rifle Competition

REPORT ON NATIONAL SCOUT RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013

The 37th Championships took place in October at the internationally renowned ‘home’ of target shooting sports – Bisley. It is a great privilege for us Scouts to be allowed such a prestigious venue and some 760 Scouts and Leaders from England and Wales descended on the place. They came from Cornwall in the West to Norfolk in the East and from Derbyshire in the North, with the southernmost Group flying in from Jersey!

Eighty six Groups took part, among them twelve from GLSW : 1st Hook, 1st & 2nd Malden, 1st North Sutton, 1st Old Malden, 1st Tolworth, 3rd Hampton Hill, 25th Purley, Royal Kingston District and Columbus, Hampton, & Titan E.S.U.s

Medals are awarded in different age groups  for air rifle & air pistol at 6 yards, for which guns are provided  Competitors may bring their own for the 10 metre events. Also on offer are field target, a biathlon, a ‘knockout’ competition,  plus small- bore and full- bore events, the latter taking place on the ‘big’ outdoor ranges.

As can be imagined, with so many competitors, medals are not easily come by, but the following  were successful:-

A GLSW Team came 5th in the 3 position Sporter air rifle event; arguably this is the most demanding discipline. (members were Ruth Holloway, Lily Prescott both of 3HH & Jamie Farquharson, 1OM).  Ruth won Gold in 6 yard air rifle with 94 ex 100 with Matt Carr, also 3HH in 3rd place. In the knockout, Jon Holloway won Silver and Will Williamson, of Hampton ESU, the Gold.  In the Ladies Plate event Ella Linden of 3 HH missed out on a medal by just 3 points. Jamie Farquharson of 1st Old Malden won the Ken White Shield for best Scout under 14 Scout in 6 yard rifle; he also won a Bronze in pistol and in Junior small-bore.

Second place and Silver medals went to a team from 25th Purley in the team pistol event and they came 5th in the Webley-Scott for team rifle. James Blain (also 25P) won a Silver in the Junior knock-out.

Winners, or not, everyone had a great time, and enthusiasm was not dampened by the damp weather.
