Jack Petchey Foundation Award Scheme
November 2007 Update
We are now into the third month of Jack Petchey achievement awards. GSLs and Unit Leaders should know the month in which they are eligible for an award for one of their young people, and so have plenty of time to nominate them. The system is now running fairly smoothly – all you have to do is return the form electronically to your District Administrator for his/her records and they will forward it to me for mine. It is very simple but we are struggling sometimes to get them. It seems we cannot even give away money to some Groups/Units!
If you do not get your names to your Administrator by the end of the month the award will be passed on to another Group/Unit and you will lose it. You only have one award to sort but I have 14 so I really need these names well before the end of the month. Late arrivals delay the sending of cheques to everyone.
You can send your form in early, in fact the earlier the better because if there is a missing application yours can be the one slotted in!
If you do not have a copy of the form then you can download one from the GLSW web site (www.glswscouts.org.uk/2007/jack-petchey-foundation-award-winner.doc).
Who is Jack Petchey?
Born in 1925 and brought up in the East End of London. he was a Scout and holds the Silver Acorn. He received the OBE in 2004 in recognition of his contribution to young people. He established the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999 and gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11–25.
What geographical area does it cover?
Previously North and East London and West Essex. From 2007 the area is being extended to cover GLSW.
What’s in it for our Groups / District and County?
Initially there are two types of award:
- Achievement Award
-
Each District will be allocated a number of awards to share between their Groups/Units. Each Group/Unit will be allocated a set month in which to make an award. In that month the Group/Unit will select a youth member for a defined achievement; it could be for their enthusiasm, sustained attendance, commitment or for help or service to others. The list is endless but it must be to someone aged 11-25.
The Group arranges for a presentation of the award certificate and a ‘dummy’ cheque to be made to the individual in that allotted month. Before the end of that month the GSL sends the Jack Petchey Award nomination form to the District Administrator and the £200 (payable to the Group) will be made within a month. The award is to be spent in such a way to benefit the Group as the young person decides, a camp, activity or visit or item of equipment. An individual may not receive a second award at any time.
The award certificates and dummy cheques will be with the District Administrator who will distribute them to GSLs so that the presentations can be made in the appropriate month (as previously decided by the DC).
The Jack Petchey Foundation regards the presentation of the award certificates as the key part of the award and the District’s continued involvement in the scheme is dependant upon these presentations being timely and properly performed.
- Leader Award
-
Each District will nominate one Leader (who is over 21 has at least 2 years service) who has demonstrated an outstanding ability to encourage and motivate young people. The District will receive £1000 to be spent in such a way as the Leader decides. Nominations are to be made in May each year.
What does the young person or Leader receive?
There will be an annual County award presentation at which all Achievement Award and Leader Award winners will be expected to attend with up to two guests of their choice.
At that presentation they will receive a medallion in a presentation box. The Leader award winners will also receive their District’s £1000 cheque. If they do not attend the presentation they will not get the medallion nor will the Leader get the £1,000 and this is almost without exception. Jack Petchey considers the recognition of the achievement to be much greater than the financial reward
How is the scheme managed?
The scheme will be managed through myself as the County Administrator. Each District has its own Administrator. The District is advised on the number of Group Awards that can be made in each period (initially July 2007 – December 2007). It is then up to the District to allocate those nominations between their Groups/Explorer Units and to specify the month in which each award is made.
The District/Group decides which young person will be the award winner. There is no County involvement in these decisions. Once the nomination form is received the award is automatic (provided it is received within the correct time slot and the form fully completed).
The £200 Achievement Award cheques (or electronic transfer) will be sent directly to GSLs. A separate invitation to award winners to attend the annual presentation will be sent directly to them. The £1,000 Leader Award cheques will be presented by the Jack Petchey Foundation at the annual ceremony.
It is understood that any Achievement Awards not claimed in the allocated month will probably be lost as will any Leader Award where the winner does not attend the annual County presentation evening.
The scheme starts in July 2007 when everything hopefully will be in place.
Is there any other funding available?
Not yet. It depends on how well we do with the Achievement Awards. In any case nothing else is available to us for the next six months. However if all goes well we hope that we may be able to access other grants.
Any Questions?
Either contact me or your District co-ordinator.
